I think there is a serious mistake with this site
the way it is going, because it should acknow-
ledge the fact that it is for bilingual people, mos-
tly, therefore bilinguism should be allowed.
Those who can't write English are being kept
out in a horrible display of intolerance or airs
of superiority.
The site would profit immensely if Spanish were
allowed here too.

I'm not sure that inviting people from the other page will be a solution in the lung run, but it's a good start. I think for this page to take off, we need to invite also people that has English as a first language.
I imagine that the possibility of writing mistakes and looking inept in this screen, is "putting off" a lot of people...
Gaius, it seems to me, that you are eager to help everyone that needs it; but at the same time, being corrected in public, it's somehow hard to take (a question of pride). Could you do it in privet in their individual books, and that way give them a chance to "save face" in the learning process? I think that will be much better... even I may be less afraid to participate .

I have seen a button on those LDV that say
Private Message. I have never used, but I'll
find out how to do it.
I have been teaching English as a second lan
guage for several years to hispanic and italian
immigrants here in the New York Metropolitan
area and it never ceases to amaze me how
latin people don't apply common sense the
way anglosaxons do when they assume, quite
correctly, that mistakes are a very important
and unavoidable part of any learning process.
It is sheer lunacy for any one to consider him
self or herself inept when learning something.
I wish I could put a lot of my material here
but, unfortunately, almost all of it doesn't be
long to me. The rights of reproduction are the
property of the publications that paid for that
material when it was published.
I intend to write short stories and light poetry
for the site during this Christmas season when
I will have a few days off to goof around and
relax.
In the meantime I hope people would stop that
nonsense of thinking that making mistakes when
writing in a second language, during the learning
of such a language, is an indication of ineptitude. | | |

"Literature" going through the cyberspace, that one has to question the good sense of making the effort in a language that is not our first. If my writings in may mother's language are not so good, isn't a false pretense to even try to do it in a language I will never dominate completely? | | |

I hope I am not badly mistaken on thinking I have
been able to write in English and Spanish almost
as well as I do it in italian.
I earned a degree in Linguistics and after that I
studied Semiology and Social Communication. I
have also been a writer since I was fourteen years
old (I began writing in a weekly paper published by
a friend of my father. After two months I had to
stop because I got selected for the Youth National
Soccer Team. But then the readers began to write
and call the editor asking why they had stopped
my column. When the editor offered to pay me for
my material I started to get money on my writing,
and I have continued getting paid ever since) and
based on that I assume I have some credibility on
this things.
Let me, then, tell you as a Linguist: You are not
going to dominate your mother's language either.
Languages are too complex for one to believe in
the possibility of getting to that point of infallibi
lity about them.
I am a very good writer in Italian. I have won pri
zes and awards and I still think I don't even know
ten percent of what it is to know about Italian.
It took me three years to lose the trepidation and
the fear and start writing in Spanish, and I am sure
glad I stuck to it since now I write, read and speak
better Spanish than a lot of native spanish speak
kers.
Writing made it possible. I hope you go on writing
in English (you are not that bad in it, anyway) and
you'll see in two or three years that it was all worth.

My mother tongue is French, I also write in Spanish, and I completely agree with you, I think nobody can reach perfection, even in their own language. I'm convinced that real polyglots don't exist. There are many people like us, who can communicate in several languages…. but writing literature is another story. | | |
