The object of my desire
By Alexandra Riera

It had finally happened; her worst fears had come true. The storm had blown everything in sight. Gusts of winds had torn the roofs of the houses sucking the people inside them. Lightening had struck buildings setting them on fire. An earthquake had made the ground tremble turning everything that was standing into mere rubble. Smoke mingled with the rain and the air smelled rancid as Ruth calmly walked by on her high heels. She had wished for it. And it had come true. She shouldn’t complain.

The burning heat didn’t affect her although she only wore a little skirt which would better be described as a wide belt and not too wide at that. She could feel the heat as it were a cool breeze caressing her soft skin but felt a burning desire inside her that was more powerful than her original wish. She crossed the town hurriedly stepping over the rubble and jumping over the gaps on her way to the church yard. She looked up and saw lightening cross the sky in front of her and hurtle into the church’s cross sending it crashing down in front of her.

Ruth stepped back out of reflex; her blond hair bouncing as she did so. She knew she was immune to everything. She had always known she was special, she had always had the feeling that her wishes always came true and thus never bothered to wish for anything. She just let life go by and enjoyed it as much as any young woman would until she met Allan. Until then, she hadn’t bothered much about the opposite sex in a serious way.

Allan changed all that for her. He came into her life almost by accident and he charmed her to such an extent that she used to follow him everywhere he went. She even chastised herself when she realised she was actually spying on him. He had never spoken to her, not even glanced at her and yet she felt inexorably drawn to him. One night, without realising it she preyed into his thoughts and discovered to her disgust that he thought she was a stupid brat. Love and admiration for Allan turned into instant aversion and then hate when she envisaged the whole town thinking the same thing about her. After all, she had made a fool of herself.

She had wished him dead, not just dead but crushed by the earth. She had wished the whole town gone with him too as violently as possible and that is what had happened.

She kneeled in front of the only living thing standing in the churchyard and tore her shirt open as she wailed for the destruction she had caused and regretting letting her mind go. The tree in front of her shed the last leaf onto her and as she picked it up she thought that she had been really stupid and wished she was clever.

She turned into a brunette.
